About Event

Join Latinxs in Sustainability (LiS) as we team up with Honeycomb Collective and Queering The Path on Thursday, July 25 at 6 pm in Pure Project North Park for a panel discussion on what it's like to work in sustainability as a member of the Latinx/e and LBGTQ+ communities, both in a professional and personal setting.

About our moderator:

Brenda Castruita (she/they) is the Climate Research Coordinator at the San Diego Regional Climate Collaborative. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from the University of California, Riverside in 2021. She has since worked directly with community organizations in the nonprofit sector to promote self-sufficiency and improve the lives of historically underserved communities. Brenda enjoys combining their background in community engagement with their love for the environment, ensuring that equity and environmental justice is at the forefront of the organization's programs and projects.

About our speakers:

Moni Banuelos (they/he/elle/el) is a trans, Mexican meet-up guide for Queering the Path and has been a part of the organization for 3 years. QTP focuses on making the outdoors more accessible and affirming to QTBIPOC. Moni helps out with hikes, event planning, social media management, and camping trips. They are very passionate about getting Black and brown queer and trans people outdoors and sharing their love for gardening/planting.

Bryan Cardenas (they/them/elle pronouns) is a first-gen college student and double alum of the University of San Diego with a bachelor's degree in sociology with a concentration in social justice and a minor in ethnic studies and a master’s in nonprofit leadership and management. During their time as a masters student at USD’s School of Leadership & Education Sciences, Bryan served as a graduate research assistant that would support environmental projects such as the State of Biodiversity Report led by the San Diego Natural History Museum and SANDAG, and most recently as part of the evaluation team for the San Diego Foundation and Environmental Health Coalition’s first cohort of their Transformative Climate Communities grantees. As a leader, Bryan is personally driven by social interactions, which led them to become an outstanding face-to-face fundraiser that has supported building the community of monthly donors for organizations such as Greenpeace and the San Diego Zoo & Wildlife Alliance. Furthermore, Bryan’s passion for creative self-expression has manifested through their work with digital media marketing and communications, most recently having worked as a supervisor for the University of San Diego’s Office of Sustainability’s Marketing & Communications team - which also became an avenue which allowed Bryan to participate in groups such as the Climate Science Alliance’s Bi-National Working Group and Princeton University’s Sustainability Communicators Network.

About Honeycomb Collective:

Honeycomb Collective is a growing network of LGBTQIA2S+ and BIPOC change makers dedicated to creating a liberated, self-reliant future through radical community, creativity, and care. Our mission is to show others that a safer, more loving, and sustainable world is possible within our lifetime. Through diverse events, workshops, and collaborations, we strive to inspire and empower our communities to envision and build this future together.

About Queering The Path (QTP):

Queering The Path is an outdoor community group based in San Diego Ca. In the fall of 2019 we began to take root by hosting hikes and Kayaking events. In 2021 we bounced back as a collective and began to branch out to continue cultivating a space for Queer and Trans Black, Indigenous, People of Color & LGBTQ+ in the outdoors. Our goal is to support our community by creating a welcoming environment for participants to learn outdoor skills and to create community here on Kumeyaay Land. We believe each individual has a unique background and experience that they bring to QTP.
