OUR MISSION & VISION

OUR MISSION

Latinxs in Sustainability (LiS) is a collective that aims to unite Latinx-identifying professionals and students in the sustainability field. We work to dismantle the structural barriers that have hindered Latinx representation in the environmental movement and champion inclusive and accessible career pathways for our Latinx communities. We provide Latinx climate leaders with the resources, awareness, and opportunities they need to thrive in their personal and professional journeys, thus becoming change agents for their communities and beyond. Among our member base, these opportunities take the form of networking, mentorship, knowledge sharing, professional development, and community building.

THE CHALLENGE

Latinxs in Sustainability was founded out of an understanding that our current socioeconomic and political systems do not enable Latinx people to meaningfully lead and reap the benefits of most climate solutions. The median energy burden for Hispanic households is 20% higher than that for white households (ACEEE, 2020). In addition, Hispanic/Latinx workers represent nearly 17% of the clean energy workforce in comparison white workers at 60% (E2, 2021).

OUR VISION

Climate change is one of the most defining issue of our time. As we transition to a more sustainable future, LiS’ vision is to be a leading voice and champion of the Latinx community within the sustainability field. We believe that in order to achieve a truly equitable sustainable future, it is vital to have representation of impacted communities at the table when critical climate decisions are made and solutions are identified. We are committed to establishing pathways for marginalized underrepresented and under-resourced Latinx communities to be a part of the climate solutions.

Our Vision:

  • Latinx students and professionals are aware of the multitude of careers within sustainability

  • Latinx workers early in their career feel supported by a network of Latinx professionals and mentors

  • Latinx workers are represented in senior leadership roles and benefit from upward socioeconomic mobility

  • Our community is recognized for the innovation, creativity, passion, and intersectional perspective we bring to climate work

Ultimately, climate solutions led by Latinx talent are implemented at scale, and Latinx communities reap the benefits of a more just green economy!
